On Turning 30

I think my favorite sun is winter sun

It is unsuspecting to the receiver

Especially in February (although not this particular, very sunny February)

The coldest and grayest and longest (although really the shortest) month of the year

My birthday month of 30 years!

I welcome a new “age”

A new era

I do not long for younger days as some might

I know where I went, what I did, who I was

I have not forgotten where I’m from-and I am grateful

I notice wrinkles on my brow and think of all world’s (my world’s) problems I’ve solved this year

I notice my skin is a little dull and I am reminded of how much time I’ve spent admiring in equal amounts the sun and the rain (and the occasional snow)

My middle is a little softer-it could be the doing of my new baby, and it is easy to blame babies for such things, but really, it is all the feasting I’ve done with warm and engaging company around tables and living rooms and our favorite restaurants

I have loved it all
I am 30 and I should be 30
30 fits
30 is comfortable

Along with winter sun, I think afternoon sun is my favorite

It is experienced and cozy, full of color and bold about it

It is calm and confident as it breaks through the blinds in my house

Long rectangular slats reminding me that the day is not done

There is still plenty of time-hours even, before the night takes over

There is lots of living left to do
Here’s to another year of wrinkles, weathering, and becoming a little more “well-rounded"

The Authentic Winter Winter saunters in like an unwelcome, necessary friend Her cold breath baring truth That we hide from in layers Of colorful wool and heated blankets Her uncovered branches, offensive and sharp A lady with wit and wisdom We love to hate her But she is authentic and shows us beauty Whether we like it or not Whether our coffees or hot toddies are warm enough To shield us from the biting feeling Of the realization Of who we really are When our own branches are stripped Our facades harden and crack falling to the ground Like snowflakes Covering the green and brown grasses With ashen shadows of our projected realities….identities We play in our perceptions In the stories we tell ourselves We build them Shaping our lives with our frozen hands Trying to make them good enough Afraid when the distant sun melts the figures we have created And turns them into wet remnants soon to evaporate The cold remains We face the bar...

i am thankful for this

"We think of God in the dramatic things, the glorious sunsets, the majestic mountains, the tempestuous seas; but he is in the little things too, in the smile of a passerby or the gnarled hands of an old man, in a daisy, a tiny insect, falling leaves. God is in the music, in laughter and in sorrow too. And the grey times, when monotony stretches out ahead, these can be the times of steady, solid growth into God. Until we dwell in him and allow him to dwell in us we shall be strangers to peace." - Prayer by Mother Frances Dominica
